Field Archaeologist

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge and experience in principles of archeological field survey, excavation and data recording.
    Ability to work with multiple stakeholders in project planning and field operations. Experience and knowledge of working with indigenous descendant communities.
  • Experience working in the environment and climatic conditions typical of rural Alaska.
  • Sensitivity and awareness of the issues inherent in recovering human remains.
  • Ability and willingness to work within the project health and safety guidelines.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Master’s Degree in Anthropology, or closely related field, with emphasis in archaeology required.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Ability to set up and operate a total station.
  • Alaska Native or Native American preference, but all qualified applicants are encouraged to apply.

Traditional Knowledge Technician

Location: Quinhagak, AK

Duration: May 2026 – October 2026

Organization: Nalaquq, LLC

Position Overview:
Nalaquq LLC seeks a qualified Traditional Knowledge Technician to join our team for a summer fieldwork in Quinhagak. We will provide training and pay for individuals to learn how to use UAS aircraft (Drones) and collect scientific samples to monitor salmon populations for sustainable fishing practices.

Responsibilities:

  • Operate UAS for aerial surveys of salmon along the Kanektok River.
  • Assist researchers sample salmon species at fish camps for analysis.
  • Assist in the setup and maintenance of UAS equipment, including cameras and thermal sensors.
  • Work closely with the project team to execute week-long UAS surveys, capturing high-resolution imagery and data.
  • Learn how to save and process data to make maps.
  • Help select sites for surveys using local traditional knowledge.
  • Participate in training and preparation activities at the project site.
  • Operate motor vehicles including boats and Hondas.

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of the Qanirtuuq river, channels, and salmon spawning locations.
  • Interest in learning how to pilot thermal drones.
  • Strong abilities to troubleshoot and resolve equipment issues in the field.
  • Ability to work in remote and challenging environments with a small team.
  • Willingness to camp upriver (camping supplies included).
  • Excellent communication skills and a collaborative spirit.
  • Ability to travel with a boat (gas/oil provided)

Compensation:

  • Compensation based on previous experience.
  • Full-time temporary position, estimated at 40 hours per week for the duration of the project.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Support Technician

Type of Position: Temporary, Full-Time – 1-year term.

Location: The field activities of the position, plus in-person training, will be carried out entirely in the area around Quinhagak.

Experience: No prior experience is necessary, and all training will be provided.

Compensation: Salary will be discussed during the interview process and will depend on the individual’s availability, interest, and qualifications.

Position Overview:

We are hiring for 2 GIS Support Technician roles, as part of a federal grant awarded to Nalaquq, LLC and the University of Arkansas (UA) to study river change and salmon health. Successful applicants will be trained in a range of transferable skills in the spatial sciences. The Nalaquq team will supervise applicants’ progress and activities, and the individual will work closely (both in-person and remotely) with UA staff involved in the project.

Responsibilities: The main responsibilities for the job are to carry out research activities in support of the project, specifically:

  • Using drones to create accurate aerial maps (also known as “orthomosaics”) and 3D models of the landscape
  • Using satellite remote sensing to understand how the landscape has changed over the decades
  • Learning basic to intermediate geographical information system (GIS) skills to create maps and graphics to communicate research results.
  • Contribute local traditional knowledge to help co-design a research approach alongside project staff
