As Quinhagak faces increasingly unpredictable winters and springs, Quinhagak Search & Rescue Inc. is preparing for what is expected to be a particularly challenging year. With climate change leading to fluctuating temperatures, irregular freezing and thawing cycles, and dangerous environmental shifts, the need for Search and Rescue services has never been greater. Local hunters, fishermen, and community members face new risks every day, and Quinhagak SAR is stepping up to ensure their safety.

A Volunteer-Led Effort: Empowering the Community

At the heart of Quinhagak Search & Rescue Inc. is a team of dedicated volunteers, all of whom risk their lives to protect their neighbors. This volunteer-based organization provides critical support for the community, helping those in need during emergencies. With growing demand for SAR services due to unpredictable environmental conditions, the community is working to strengthen the volunteer base and expand preparedness efforts.

Quinhagak Search & Rescue Inc. aims to provide its volunteers with the tools and knowledge necessary to face these challenges head-on, blending traditional survival knowledge with modern technology to increase effectiveness and safety.

Transferring Knowledge, Bridging Generations

A new initiative is underway to preserve Quinhagak’s invaluable traditional knowledge for future generations. As some of the community’s most experienced SAR volunteers prepare for retirement, they are working to pass down the wisdom they’ve accumulated over decades of service. This knowledge includes key survival skills — such as navigation, weather prediction, and land and sea navigation — that have been passed down through generations.

Quinhagak Search & Rescue Inc. is ensuring this knowledge is not only preserved but adapted to modern needs. The goal is to merge time-tested practices with new technological innovations, ensuring that future SAR volunteers are equipped to tackle challenges in an ever-changing environment.

A Self-Sustaining Organization for the Future

To ensure that the knowledge transfer and SAR services are sustainable, Quinhagak Search & Rescue Inc. has become an official 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. This move allows the program to receive funding and support, train the next generation of SAR volunteers, and equip them with the best resources available.

By incorporating both traditional skills and modern tools, Quinhagak Search & Rescue Inc. is laying the foundation for a more resilient and self-sufficient community, prepared to respond to the challenges posed by a rapidly changing environment.

Preserving Cultural Knowledge and Embracing Innovation

Indigenous communities like Quinhagak have long relied on hands-on learning and oral tradition to pass down knowledge of the land, sea, and weather. However, today’s rapidly changing world presents new challenges, making it more important than ever to preserve these traditions while also adopting new technologies that can enhance their application.

Quinhagak Search & Rescue Inc. is dedicated to maintaining this delicate balance. Community members, the “hunters and gatherers” of the group, will share their deep understanding of local ecosystems, navigation, and survival skills. Volunteers will learn to integrate modern technologies like GPS devices, Garmin systems, and drones to track wildlife, monitor environmental changes, and assist in SAR operations.

By combining these two forms of knowledge — traditional wisdom and modern technology — Quinhagak Search & Rescue Inc. is ensuring that the community is prepared to respond to emergencies with a robust and multifaceted approach.

A Technology-Enhanced Learning Environment

The Red Building has become the focal point for the organization’s knowledge-sharing efforts. This space is where older and younger generations can come together to learn and teach.

Here, volunteers will receive hands-on training in modern SAR tools, such as GPS units and drones, alongside traditional survival tactics. For example, drones equipped with thermal cameras can assist in locating missing persons or tracking wildlife in difficult terrain. These technologies enhance the SAR team’s ability to respond quickly and effectively, especially in low-visibility or remote conditions.

Looking Ahead: Building a Resilient Future

By combining traditional knowledge with advanced technologies, Quinhagak Search & Rescue Inc. is ensuring the survival and continuity of crucial survival skills while empowering the younger generation to take on future leadership roles. The technology used today will ensure that these practices are documented, stored, and available for future generations.

This initiative is a model of how technology, when used thoughtfully, can help preserve culture, enhance safety, and improve community resilience. Quinhagak Search & Rescue Inc. is creating a future where both traditional knowledge and modern tools work in harmony to protect and sustain the community.
