AOOS Salmon Project

AOOS Salmon Project - 2024
Salmon Count Project Final Report
Nalaquq, LLC—in collaboration with the Alaskan Ocean Observation System (AOOS), American Seafoods, and Hampden-Sydney College—is excited to announce funding for an upcoming project for the summer of 2024. Our project will employ Yup’ik Unpiloted Aerial Systems (UAS) technicians to conduct comprehensive salmon counts of the Kanektok (var. Qanirtuuq) River. We hope this study will provide more accurate and timely data regarding the number, species, and spawning areas of salmon for commercial and subsistence fishing. Data generated from this project will assist the Yup’ik village of Quinhagak in determining total salmon counts to prevent overfishing and ensure conservation, especially regarding the king and chum salmon depletion in the Yukon and Kuskokwim drainages. Read more about this project on the aoos.org website.
